Planned changes to the Australian Migration Program for the new financial year

Yesterday the Department of Home Affairs announced their plans to introduce the following changes for the coming financial year:

  • Visa Application charges will increase by 5.4% on July 1

  • Migration Planning levels have been reduced to 160,000 per year

  • From November 2019 the Skilled Migration Points test will award additional points for secondary applicants with competent (and above) English levels. Details have not yet been announced.

  • RSMS (s/c 187) as well as Skilled Regional visas (s/c 489) are to be discontinued from 1 November 2019.

  • Instead, the Department will introduce two new regional visas: Skilled Empoyer Sponsored (Provisional) and the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional). Both visas will be on a provisional basis, granted for five years and offering a pathway to PR after 3 years (instead of two years previously)

  • A new regional temporary graduate visa will be introduced for students with Australian higher or post graduate qualifications, who have been studying at a regional campus

  • The Work and Holiday visa cap for Indonesia has been increased.
