TAS 2026-27 Skilled Migration Update: What It Means For You

update

Key Allocation Changes for 2026 – 2027

Tasmania has officially released its 2026-27 skilled migration allocation: 2,050 places.

Compared to the 2025-26 cycle, Tasmania has increased its intake:

  • Subclass 190 (Skilled Nominated) -> Increased to 1,250 places (up from 1,200).
  • Subclass 491 (Skilled Work Regional) -> Increased to 800 places (up from 650).

The program is set to reopen for new Registrations of Interest (ROI) in the coming weeks.

Understanding the 491 – 190 Switch-Risk

If you currently have a Subclass 491 nomination application in the system, that has not yet been decided, Tasmania will not automatically consider you for the Subclass 190 stream on that same application. If you want your application to be considered for a s/c 190 application, you must withdraw your current s/c 491 application, wait for the 2026-2027 program to open and then submit a fresh ROI for the s/c 190.

Should You Withdraw Your Current Application?

The Risk: There is no guarantee you will receive an invitation for the 190. It depends on the volume of interest and pro-rata availability at the time. It’s a bit like trading a pending application for a lottery ticket. Assuming “more places” means “easier to get” is a dangerous assumption, especially if you are offshore (see the recent announcements on priority processing). Therefore, even if your occupation is in high demand, you may still be squeezed out by onshore candidates with higher points or better English scores.

Get A Professional Assessment Before Acting

Before you withdraw anything, know your odds. Book a pre-application assessment—I’ll run the numbers with you and explain the risk you’re taking.

We will:

  • Analyze your current application status.
  • Calculate your points and determine if the risk of switching to 190 is worth it for your specific occupation.
  • Prepare your ROI strategy to maximize your chances when the portal opens.
