Update on State Nominated Migration

19th August 2024:

Since July 1, several states have opened their skilled migration program to new candidates. This affects the Skilled Nominated Visa (s/c 190) as well as the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (s/c 491).

Both visa categories are points-tested visas, which means candidates will require sufficient points to qualify. Points are awarded for candidates’ age, English language skills, qualifications, work experience, spouse skills, and others. An Expression of Interest, which is submitted to the Department of Home Affairs outlines points claimed and provides the basis for a potential visa application if an invitation to apply is issued.

Some States allow candidates to directly register their interest in state nomination. However, most States rely on information provided in above mentioned Expression of Interest to choose interesting candidates and invite them to apply for State Nomination. It is therefore of utmost importance to prepare an  Expression of Interest with great care and ensure to not make any claims one cannot verify. This is especially true for points claimed for past work experience, as it is a very common mistake to ‘overclaim’ points, which can easily lead to a nomination (or visa) refusal.

States who are open for new applications are:

  • South Australia
  • Western Australia
  • Tasmania
  • Victoria
  • ACT
  • Northern Territory

At this stage closed remain:

  • Queensland
  • New South Wales

Most of the states identified new occupations as well as priority occupations and target industry sectors in their selection criteria. Among the occupations in particular high demand are: trades (especially construction), medical professions, and IT specialists.

If you wish to apply for a skilled visa for Australia and need assistance with your application or would like to know what your chances are to apply, feel free to get in touch and book a consultation to discuss your options.
